10 fitness/wellness related things to do when a typhoon is coming

So here it comes again, T8 signal is on! That means out of work early (yay!) but gym – like almost everything – is closed (boooooo).

As we knew this day would come, we got ready! Here is a list of 10 fitness/wellness related ideas of things to do at home on a T8 day.

1. Move

Moving will always make you feel better. Equipment is not needed, a smart body weight circuit can work great and you can still challenge yourself a bit more with what you have: water bottles, elevating some exercises with a book or a chair etc. Just type “body weight workout” on any search engine and you’ll find plenty of suggestions.

If you’re not in the mood for a sweat, just go for some rolling or stretching! YouTube can be the answer with some stretching or yoga videos at your level, to guide you.

2. Write

Your achievements, your goals, your training plan, your meal plan, how you feel… Writing is a very empowering exercise and you’ll be amazed at how it can help handle emotions or find the motivation to move forward when the goal or plan is written in black and white.

3. Read

For many of us, finding time to read every day is a struggle. So make the best of the time you have today! Grab that book you began aaaages ago or take the time to select a new one to dive into. It’s always easier to find time and motivation to read once you’re hooked and want to know how the story ends!

4. Cook

It’s the best time to cook nice meals for the day, but also to meal prep for the next days. It’s way easier to make better choices when you have everything ready on hand! No inspiration? Try those meal prep ideas.

5. Scrub (with homemade stuff)

You never have time to do it and all that heat, sweat and pollution are not your skin’s best friends. So get in your kitchen and try a homemade scrub! Just mix the ingredients, spread, allow to set in the skin for a few minutes, rub-a-dub-dub and rinse.

Moisturizing body scrub: 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp vanilla.

Brightening face scrub: 1/2 fresh lemon juice, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1tbsp honey.

Softening lip scrub: 2 tsp coffee ground, 1 tsp olive oil, 1tsp honey.

6. Netflix and chill

You have Netflix? Good start. If not, it could be the ideal day to go for the one-month free trial…

If you’re after something food related, a few documentaries like “Forks over knives”, “Food choices”, “Cowspiracy” or “Fat, sick and nearly dead” investigate the consequences of the way we eat today on our health and earth.

If you’re looking for some inspiration and training motivation, “Pumping iron”, “Fittest on earth”, “Usain Bolt: the fastest man alive”, “30 for 30: into the wind” or “SEC storied: Lolo Jones” can totally rock your world.

7. Meditate

You’ve been thinking/saying for weeks – if not months – that you’d love to try meditation? Happy days, T8 is giving you some time to!

You can research on the internet and find quite easily articles giving you keys to start. I personally found this guide quite helpful. When it comes to apps, you can find plenty too but Headspace for example, is easy to use and a very efficient “meditation trainer”.

8. Rest

Because recovery is key and because living and working in Hong Kong, chances are you don’t sleep/rest enough, now is a great time to rest. We’ll never say it enough, rest helps to prevent injuries, support muscle growth, immune system, memory…

9. Shop online

A little bit of shopping has never hurt anyone… and getting new things is a great mood/motivation boost. Some local brands like Rumi X or online shop like Whatever It Takes or She Collective are at your disposal!

10. Clean and/or declutter

This one is a little funny but it’s a good one: catching up on your cleaning. We’ll never emphasize enough how a clean and tidy place can bring you peace of mind and space to move and breathe.

If your activewear drawers are as full as mine, a bit of decluttering could also be a good idea… and it means more space for your new stuff!
