Disciplines Hula hoop dance and yoga
Created in 2015

Turning Circles was created in 2015 by Emma Brown. This certified yoga teacher fell in love with hula hoop 7 years ago when a friend did a fire hoop performance at her wedding! Experienced teacher now, she wanted to share her love for movement and help others to connect with their bodies in a lighthearted way.

A few teachers have now joined and Turning Circles offers a hula hoop dance course since last April, but also a yoga for back pain and yoga for beginners – because everybody will you tell how amaaaazing yoga is for your body, but pushing the door of a studio to learn the basics is not the easiest!

I’ve personally always been very impressed by how some girls can hula hoop like it’s nothing when on my side, I just look like I’ve lost my mind… So I tried a class of their 8-week hula hoop dance beginners course.

The hula hoop workout

To master hula hoop dance, you have to use your core, legs and shoulders. But after trying out I’d say that the main thing it will improve is your focus, your coordination and the mobility of your articulations – think wrists, fingers, hips, knees…

This was for sure the hardest part for me, but it became super fun when getting the first loops and moves right! My personal tip would be to listen and watch to your instructor of course, but not too much: trying to make it by yourself, you may figure out how to find your balance, which finger to use to toss the hoop etc. Always try with the other arm/foot/side too, you could be surprised at how easier it is on your usual “weak” side (plus, that would be too bad to work only one side of your body!).

This beginners course offers a great starting point, no matter how fit and flexible you are. You learn different moves and tricks, that will be then incorporated into a type of dance. Classes take place outdoors, which means amazing view and nice evening breeze. The group is quite small (7-9 people in average), so you always get some one-to-one attention and as everybody is a beginner, it makes things easier and much more fun as well.

You can buy the 8 weeks package and choose the weekly session you want to join or you can just drop in a class. The next 8-week hula hoop dance beginners course starts on July 11th.

All classes take place in Tamar Park (Pier 10 if raining), from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm:

Great, and totally agree on your point; you really need to figure out the feeling of controlling or maybe following those hoops, a little like the first time you manage to ride a bike right?
